Kinja'd!!!

Went to a hipster lunch place for a coworkers birthday. It was called Limeade and biscuits. None of us knew what to expect but we went because it was silly. This thing above is called “The Titanic” and unlike its namesake it did not go down easily (DAD JOKES!). It’s lettuce (iceberg...get it!) Tomatos, A fried Chicken breast bacon pickles and some sickly terrible super hot and sweet mustard and an overcooked biscuit as ill suited to be a bun replacement as I would be. It wasn’t bad (aside from the mustard which was too hot...not mustard hot, some kind of pepper hot...and too sweet at the same time). It was the mango salsa of mustard, but somehow worse (no! you’re wrong, it’s terrible).

It wouldn’t be so bad but it was $12, it also came with a hand full of tortilla chips (?) and a thimble of lime salsa (not bad). You want Limeade? $4. It wasn’t even good.

Shockingly popular.

The good news is that today I’m having the best brisket In Utah for lunch. So, YES!

Looks like it’d be okay if you slapped it on a proper roll/bun with some ketchup or something.

Sustainably localized and sourcified with frere traid ingremaments!

Ever notice how everything — not just the trendy stuff — is excessively described.

“I want a BLT, please.”

“We have a stone-ground wheat bread with applewood smoked Cerdo del Valle bacon and Grandma Foster’s heirloom tomatoes on a bed of Titanic lettuce.”

that bacon looked woefully undercooked. Yes, I like mine crispy.

I hit up Red Iguana as I left town on Thursday. I miss that place so much.

I believe that’s a salad with two big croutons attached to each side.

I asked what makes zupas “ancient wheat” bread worthy of such a title. “It’s just wheat bread” was the reply.

Then that nonsense trickles down. McDonald’s is describing some of their burgers as ‘artisanal’. STAHP.

It’s because crisp bacon is the only bacon

I’ve found about a third of the hipster joints popping up on every corner are pretty good, and the rest... Well. Not even for my worst enemy. I do appreciate the interesting drink choices, seems like good bartenders gravitate to these places.

None of them are particularly cheap though

This sounds better than the indigenous cuisine of UT, so I’d try it. Of course it also sounds like the kind of short-lived trendy things there, too.

There were some decent slightly froofy places down the hill from the U (that whole region heading east is full of places to eat), but that was almost 15 years ago now.

Also, $12 for lunch doesn’t even sound expensive. I pay more for lesser burgers where I live now.

Nah you have to slow cook bacon in an oven so it get’s like this crystalline structure. Not crispy, but it’s also not floppy and chewy.

The closest thing we have to this is a little bakery called “Baked” (wow, catchy) - it’s actually one of several locations. It replaced a little family-owned and -operated bakery that had been there for like, 80 years, reliably open at 5am for mediocre coffee, great pastries and amazing doughnuts.

After much anticipation, Baked opened up shop. I had to check it out, so I went in one day... much to my disappointment, they had a bunch of generic-looking baked goods: cookies, brownies, cupcakes, but NOTHING of the category that I’d eat at 8:30am with my coffee, like a cinnamon roll, a croissant, or a doughnut.

“But we do have 37 varieties of flavored locally roasted fair trade coffee!”

First of all, the best local coffee shop has a roasting facility within SIGHT of this “bakery.” Second, No. just no.

I didn’t see any mention of a fist full of cilantro... so the place can’t be that popular.

That place is kinda overrated and definitely overpriced. Pig in a Jelly Jar does hipster brunch food far better.

Not sure what Zupas uses, but there are types of wheat species that are considered “ancient”. Einkorn, spelt, Khorasan and emmer. They predate modern humans and are quite a bit different than the species that arose within the last 10k years. Still very hipster.

Based on my username: on a scale from one to 10, I give it a “eh”. They are trying, but in order to be good, I’d say use less ingredients, and ones that go well together. Bacon and biscuits, sure. Biscuits and mustard with lettuce- no.
